Indications
- Short-term treatment of insomnia
- Sleep initiation difficulties
- Decrease in sleep latency
Pharmacology
- Imidazopyridine derivative
- Binds to BZD receptors
- Neuronal hyperpolarisation
- Sedative action
- Short duration of hypnotic action
Dosage
- Recommended initial dose: 5mg for women
- Recommended initial dose: 5mg or 10mg for men
- Total dose not to exceed 10mg once daily
- Special dose for elderly or debilitated patients
- Special dose for patients with hepatic impairment
Administration
- Slowed effect when taken with or immediately after a meal
Interaction
- Increased risk of CNS depression with other CNS depressants
- Studies with Imipramine, Chlorpromazine, Haloperidol, Alcohol, Sertraline, and Fluoxetine
Contraindications
- Severe hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Lactation

- Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the foetus
Precautions & Warnings
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Myasthenia gravis
- History of drug or alcohol abuse
- Avoid abrupt withdrawal and rapid dose reduction
- Re-evaluate if insomnia fails to remit after 7-10 days
- Not recommended for children
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for use in children
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients below 18 years
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms: Drowsiness, impairment of consciousness
- Treatment: Symptomatic and supportive, IV fluids, Activated charcoal, Gastric lavage, Flumazenil, Haemodialysis unlikely to be useful
