Description
- Benzodiazepine derivative
- Safe tranquillizer with anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and central muscle relaxant actions
- Widely used in obstetrics and control of status epilepticus
Pharmacology
- Attaches to the specific site on the GABA receptor
- Potentiates the effect of GABA
- Rapid absorption after oral administration
- Peak plasma concentration within 15-90 minutes
- Mean plasma half-life of 30 hours
- Metabolized in the liver
- Traces of unchanged drug excreted in urine
- Metabolites excreted through the bile into the intestine and eliminated with the feces
Dosage & Administration
- Oral dosage for anxiety and insomnia
- Dosage for night terrors and somnambulism in children
- IM/slow IV injection for severe acute anxiety, control of acute panic attacks, and acute alcohol withdrawal
- Dosage for febrile convulsion in children
- Rectal dosage for children
Interaction
- Contraindicated with alcohol
- Potential interaction with neuroleptics, hypnotics, sedative antihistamines, CNS depressants, general anesthetics, narcotic analgesics, antidepressants, phonobarbitone, cimetidine, omeprazole, and isoniazide
