Description
- Benzodiazepine sedative indicated for emotional disturbances, cardiovascular and respiratory functional disturbances, gastrointestinal and urinary tract disturbances, psychosomatic disorders, and emotional reactions to chronic organic disease
Dosage recommendation
- Average dosage for outpatient therapy: 1.5-3 mg up to three times daily
- Standard severe case dosage especially in hospital: 6-12 mg 2 or 3 times daily
- Elderly and debilitated patients require lower doses
- Children dosage: 0.1-0.3 mg/kg bodyweight

Pharmacology
- Powerful psychotropic agent
- Reduces tension and anxiety in lower dosage
- Sedative and muscle-relaxant properties in higher dosage
- Binds to the GABA-A receptor producing a conformational change and potentiating its inhibitory effects
Interaction
- Enhanced sedative effects if combined with other centrally active drugs such as antidepressants, hypnotics, narcotics, antipsychotics, sedatives, antiepileptic drugs, sedative antihistamines, and anesthetics
- Co-administration with cimetidine may prolong elimination half-life
- Avoid concomitant intake with alcohol
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to bromazepam
- Severe respiratory insufficiency
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Sleep apnea syndrome

Pregnancy and lactation
- Safety not established during pregnancy
- Excreted in breast milk, use should be avoided during lactation
Precautions and warnings
- Development of physical and psychological dependence
- Greater risk in predisposed patients with a history of alcohol
- Withdrawal symptoms may occur upon termination of treatment
- Not recommended for primary treatment of sleeplessness caused by psychotic illness
- Caution should be exercised while driving cars or using machineries
