Description
- Bromazepam tablets for emotional disturbances, cardiovascular and respiratory functional disturbances, and gastrointestinal and urinary tract disturbances.
Indications
- Indicated for emotional disturbances, functional disturbances in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract, disturbances in the urinary tract, psychosomatic disorders, and emotional reactions to chronic organic disease.
Pharmacology
- Bromazepam binds to the GABA-A receptor, producing a conformational change and potentiating its inhibitory effects. It selectively reduces tension and anxiety in lower doses and exhibits sedative and muscle-relaxant properties in higher doses.
Dosage
- Standard dosage: 1.5-3 mg up to three times daily for outpatient therapy. In severe cases, 6-12 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Dosage is lower for elderly and debilitated patients. Children dosage adjusted to their low body weight (about 0.1-0.3 mg/kg bodyweight).

Interaction
- Sedative effects may be enhanced when combined with other centrally active drugs such as antidepressants, hypnotics, narcotics, and alcohol. Co-administration of cimetidine may prolong the elimination half-life.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to bromazepam, severe respiratory insufficiency, severe hepatic insufficiency, or sleep apnea syndrome.
Side effects
- Common side-effects include fatigue, drowsiness, muscle weakness, reduced alertness, confusion, headache, and ataxia. Anterograde amnesia may occur using therapeutic doses.
Pregnancy and lactation
- Safety during pregnancy not established. Use should be avoided during lactation due to excretion in breast milk.
Precautions and warnings
- May lead to the development of physical and psychological dependence, especially in predisposed patients with a history of alcohol. Caution required while driving or using machinery. Not recommended for the primary treatment of sleeplessness caused by psychotic illness.
