Indications
- Psychoses
- Depression with or without anxiety
Pharmacology
- Thioxanthene antipsychotic
- Inhibits dopamine-mediated effects
- Blocks postsynaptic dopamine receptors in the CNS
Dosage
- Oral administration available
- Different dosage for adults and elderly
- Intramuscular administration available for psychoses
- Specific initial and maximum dosage for different conditions and age groups
Administration
- May be taken with or without food
Interaction
- May potentiate adverse effects of drugs with antimuscarinic effects
- Reduced efficacy of levodopa
- Increases adverse extrapyramidal symptoms with dopamine antagonists
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Extremely excitable and overactive patients
- Contraindicated in mania, porphyria, coma, preexisting CNS depression, bone-marrow suppression, and phaeochromocytoma
- Not to be used during lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Patients with convulsive disorders
- Advanced hepatic, renal, cardiovascular or respiratory disease
- Tasks requiring mental alertness
- Elderly patients with dementia
- Neuroleptics with sedative effect should be withdrawn gradually
- Avoid in history of angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention, prostatic hyperplasia, breast cancer, prolactin dependent tumours, parkinsonism, myasthenia gravis, and pregnancy
- Avoid direct sunlight
