Description
A medication used for treating anxiety, depression, psychogenic depression, apathy, and other related conditions.
Dosage
Adults: Usually 2 tablets orally daily in the morning and noon. In severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets. Elderly patients: 1 tablet in the morning. Maintenance dose: Usually 1 tablet orally in the morning. In cases of insomnia or severe restlessness, additional treatment with a sedative in the acute phase is recommended.
Pharmacology
Consists of two compounds: flupentixol, a neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties, and melitracen, a bipolar thymoleptic with activating properties. The combination offers antidepressant, anxiolytic, and activating properties.
Interaction
May enhance the response to alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants. Simultaneous administration of MAO-inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises. Neuroleptics and thymoleptics reduce the antihypertensive effect of certain compounds and enhance the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline.
Contraindications
- Immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction
- Defects in bundle-branch conduction
- Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
- Acute alcohol, barbiturate and opiate intoxications
- Not recommended for patients who have received an MAO-inhibitor within two weeks
- Not recommended for excitable or overactive patients due to its activating effect
Side effects
In the recommended doses, side effects are rare. These could include transient restlessness and insomnia.
Precautions
If the patient has been treated with tranquilizers with sedative effects previously, they should be withdrawn gradually.
Pregnancy lactation
Preferably not to be given during pregnancy and lactation.
Overdose effects
In cases of overdosage, symptoms of intoxications by melitracen dominate, especially of anticholinergic nature. More rarely, extrapyramidal symptoms due to flupentixol occur. Symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken, including gastric lavage, administration of activated charcoal, and supporting respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
Therapeutic class
Combined anxiolytics & antidepressant drugs
Storage conditions
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
