Pharmacology
- Antidepressant properties

- Maximal serum concentration reached in about 4 hours after oral administration
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: Usually 2 tablets orally daily in the morning and noon
- Morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets in severe cases
- Elderly patients: 1 tablet in the morning
- Maintenance dose: Usually 1 tablet orally in the morning
Interaction
- Enhancement of response to alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants
- Simultaneous administration of MAO-inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises
- Reduction of antihypertensive effect of guanethidine and similar acting compounds
- Enhancement of effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline by thymoleptics
Contraindications
- Immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction
- Defects in bundle-branch conduction
- Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
- Acute alcohol, barbiturate and opiate intoxications
- Not recommended for excitable or overactive patients
- MAO-inhibitor intake within two weeks
Side Effects
- Rare side effects in recommended doses
- Transient restlessness
- Insomnia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Preferably not given during pregnancy and lactation

- Gradual withdrawal of tranquillizers with sedative effect
Overdose Effects
- Intoxications dominated by anticholinergic symptoms
- Extrapyramidal symptoms due to flupentixol
- Symptomatic and supportive measures
- Gastric lavage
- Activated charcoal administration
- Respiratory and cardiovascular support
- Diazepam for treating convulsions
- Biperiden for treating extrapyramidal symptoms
