Indications

Pharmacology
- Contains flupentixol and melitracen
- Flupentixol - neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties
- Melitracen - bipolar thymoleptic with activating properties
- Combination renders a preparation with antidepressant, anxiolytic, and activating properties
- Maximal serum concentration reached in about 4 hours after oral administration
- Biological half-life of flupentixol is about 35 hours, and that of melitracen is about 19 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Usually 2 tablets orally daily in the morning and noon for adults
- Morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets in severe cases
- Elderly patients: 1 tablet in the morning
- Maintenance dose usually 1 tablet orally in the morning
Interaction
- May enhance the response to alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants
- Simultaneous administration of MAO-inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises
- Neuroleptics and thymoleptics reduce the antihypertensive effect of guanethidine and similar acting compounds
Contraindications
- Immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction
- Defects in bundle-branch conduction
- Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
- Acute alcohol, barbiturate, and opiate intoxications
- Not recommended for excitable or overactive patients
- Patients who have received an MAO-inhibitor within two weeks
Side Effects
- Rare in recommended doses
- Transient restlessness
- Insomnia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Preferably not given during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Tranquillizers with sedative effect should be withdrawn gradually if previously used by the patient
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms dominated by intoxications of anticholinergic nature
- Extrapyramidal symptoms may occur
- Symptomatic and supportive measures recommended
- Gastric lavage and activated charcoal administration
- Support for respiratory and cardiovascular systems
- Epinephrine (adrenaline) must not be used for such patients
- Treatment for convulsions and extrapyramidal symptoms
