Side Effects
- Common undesirable effects include somnolence and weight gain
- Other effects may include increased appetite, elevated glucose levels, elevated triglyceride levels, dizziness, akathisia, Parkinson's disease, dyskinesia, orthostatic hypotension, mild and transient anticholinergic effects including constipation and dry mouth, asthenia, edema, and photosensitivity reaction
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should be used in pregnancy only if potential benefits justify the potential risk to the fetus
- Patients should not breastfeed while taking this medication
Precautions & Warnings
- Cautiously used in patients who have a history of seizures or conditions associated with seizures
- Cautious use in patients with low leukocyte and/or neutrophil counts
Use in Special Populations
- Not studied in subjects under 18 years of age
- Starting dose for elderly patients (age 65 and over) is 5 mg/day
- Starting dose for patients with hepatic or renal impairment is 5 mg/day
