Description
- Indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and related psychoses
- Treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder
- Pharmacology involves affinities for serotonin and dopamine receptors
- Well absorbed after oral administration with peak plasma concentrations within 5 to 8 hours
- Initial dose for schizophrenia, combination therapy, and monotherapy for mania
- Can be given without regard to meals
- Interaction with levodopa, dopamine agonists, CYP1A2 inducers and inhibitors, carbamazepine, and activated charcoal
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity and narrow-angle glaucoma
- Common side effects include somnolence, weight gain, increased appetite, elevated glucose and triglyceride levels
- Use in pregnancy and lactation
- Precautions in patients with history of seizures, low leukocyte and neutrophil counts, impaired hepatic function, and elderly patients
- Use in special populations: children, elderly patients, patients with hepatic or renal impairment
