Indications
- Treatment of acute and chronic psychoses
- Treatment of mania
- Treatment of schizophrenia
Pharmacology
- Selective monoaminergic antagonist
- High affinity for serotoninergic 5-HT2 and dopaminergic D2 receptors
- Binds to alpha1 adrenergic receptors
- Binds with lower affinity to H1 histamine and alpha2 adrenergic receptors
- Potent D2 antagonist
- Balanced central serotonin and dopamine antagonism
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 2 mg in 1-2 divided doses for psychoses
- Usual dose range of 4-6 mg daily for psychoses
- Initial 2 mg once daily for mania
- Usual dose range of 1-6 mg daily for mania
- Risperidone should be generally administered at 1 mg BID initially for schizophrenia
- Further dosage adjustments should occur at intervals of not less than 1 week
Interaction
- May antagonize the effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Chronic administration with Carbamazepine reduces plasma clearance
- Chronic administration with Clozapine may decrease clearance
- May enhance the effects of certain antihypertensives

Precautions & Warnings
- Special precaution for preexisting cardiovascular diseases
- Discontinue use if signs and symptoms of tardive dyskinesia occur
- Require caution in renal and hepatic impairment
- Special caution for elderly epilepsy and Parkinson's disease
