Indications
- Acute and chronic psychoses
- Mania
- Schizophrenia
Pharmacology
- Selective monoaminergic antagonist
- High affinity for serotoninergic 5-HT2 and dopaminergic D2 receptors
- Binds to alpha1 adrenergic receptors
- Lower affinity to H1 histamine and alpha2 adrenergic receptors
- No affinity for cholinergic receptors
- Balanced central serotonin and dopamine antagonism
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 2 mg in 1-2 divided doses
- Usual dose range of 4-6 mg daily
- Max dosage of 16 mg daily
- Special dosage for elderly or hepatic/renal impairment
- Not recommended for children under 15 years
- Specific dosages for mania and schizophrenia
Interaction
- Antagonizes effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Reduces plasma clearance with chronic Carbamazepine administration
- Decreases clearance with chronic Clozapine administration
- Enhances effects of certain antihypertensives

- Not recommended during pregnancy
