Indications
- Acute and chronic psychoses
- Mania
- Schizophrenia
Pharmacology
- Selective monoaminergic antagonist
- High affinity for serotoninergic 5-HT2 and dopaminergic D2 receptors
- Binds to alpha1 adrenergic receptors
- No affinity for 8 cholinergic receptors
- Balanced central serotonin and dopamine antagonism
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dose range 4-6 mg daily for psychoses
- Usual dose range 1-6 mg daily for mania
- Target dose of 3 mg BID for schizophrenia
Interaction
- Antagonizes effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Reduces plasma clearance with chronic administration of Carbamazepine
- Enhances effects of certain antihypertensives

Pregnancy & Lactation

- Risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone excreted in breast milk
- Women receiving Risperidone should not breastfeed
Precautions & Warnings
- Special precaution in preexisting cardiovascular diseases
- Discontinue use if signs of tardive dyskinesia occur
- Special precaution for renal and hepatic impairment, elderly, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and pregnancy
