Description
- Sperid tablet is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic psychoses, mania, and schizophrenia. It contains risperidone, a selective monoaminergic antagonist with high affinity for serotoninergic 5-HT2 and dopaminergic D2 receptors.

Pharmacology
- Selective monoaminergic antagonist
- High affinity for serotoninergic 5-HT2 and dopaminergic D2 receptors
- Binds to alpha1 adrenergic receptors
- Binds with lower affinity to H1 histamine and alpha2 adrenergic receptors
- No affinity for cholinergic receptors
- Improves positive symptoms of schizophrenia
- Balanced central serotonin and dopamine antagonism
- Reduces extrapyramidal side effect liability
Dosage & Administration
- 2 mg in 1-2 divided doses on 1st day, then 4 mg on the second day
- Usual dose range 4-6 mg daily
- Max dosage 16 mg daily
- Initial dosage for elderly or in hepatic or renal impairment: 1 mg daily in two divided doses increased in steps
- Usual dose range for mania: 1-6 mg daily
- Initial dosage for mania in elderly or in hepatic or renal impairment: 1 mg daily in two divided doses increased in steps
- Risperidone should be generally administered at 1 mg BID initially for schizophrenia
Interaction
- May antagonize the effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Chronic administration with carbamazepine reduces plasma clearance
- Chronic administration with clozapine may decrease the clearance
- May enhance the effects of certain antihypertensives
