Indications
- Treatment and prophylaxis of mania
- Bipolar disorder treatment
- Recurrent depression treatment
Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action still unknown
- Inhibition of enzymes
- Modulation of glutamate receptors
- Alters intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 gm to 1.5 gm daily
- Prophylaxis dosage: 300-400 mg daily
- Should be taken with food
Interaction
- Reduced serum levels with certain medications
- Enhanced hypothyroid effects with iodine salts
- Reduced pressor response to sympathomimetics
Contraindications
- Renal insufficiency
- Cardiovascular insufficiency
- Addison's disease
- Untreated hypothyroidism

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category D

- Decreased tolerance from sweating or diarrhoea
- Supplemental fluid and salt administration
- Careful medical supervision required
Use in Special Populations
- Renal Impairment: Adjusted dose based on Creatinine Clearance
Overdose Effects
- Stop lithium intake
- Monitor serum estimations
- No diuretic use
- Initiate osmotic diuresis or alkalinisation of urine
- Consider peritoneal or haemodialysis if necessary
