Indications
- Depressive illness
- Panic disorder
Pharmacology
Bicyclic phthalane derivative and a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, with little or no effect on noradrenaline, dopamine and GABA re-uptake. Antidepressant property. No or very low affinity for various receptors.
Dosage & Administration
- Depressive illness:
- Adult: 20 mg daily as a single dose in the morning or evening, increased if necessary to max. 60 mg daily
- Elderly: Max 40 mg daily
- Child: Not recommended
- Panic disorder:
- Adult: Initially 10 mg daily increased to 20 mg after 7 days, usual dose 20-30 mg daily; max. 60 mg daily
- Elderly: Max 40 mg daily
- Child: Not recommended
Interaction
Not to be taken concurrently with MAOIs, Serotonin agonists, Neuroleptics, Cimetidine, Alcohol, Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Macrolide antibiotics
Contraindications
Should not be used if the patient enters a manic phase

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus
- Lactation: Excreted in human breast milk. Decision whether to continue or discontinue nursing or Citalopram therapy should take into account the risks and benefits
Precautions & Warnings
Should be used with caution in patients with various conditions and in pregnancy and breastfeeding
Overdose Effects
Doses as high as 2000 mg have been taken without signs of alteration in cardiovascular parameters. Respiratory depression, convulsion may occur
