Indications
- depressive illness
- bulimia nervosa
- obsessive compulsive disorder
Pharmacology
- selective inhibition of serotonin reuptake
- increased synaptic concentration of serotonin in the CNS
- enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission
Dosage & Administration
- initial dose of 20 mg/day
- maximum dose of 80 mg/day
- maintenance dosage of 60 mg/day for bulimia nervosa
- lower dosage for patients with renal/hepatic impairment or elderly patients
Interaction
- potential interactions with MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, lithium, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and CNS active drugs
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to Fluoxetine
- combination with MAOIs or within 14 days of discontinuing therapy with MAOIs
Side Effects
- gastrointestinal effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- neurological effects like anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue
- other effects like excessive sweating, pruritus, and skin rashes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- use in pregnancy only if clearly needed
- caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- caution in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function
- caution in diabetic subjects
- supervision for depressed patients with suicidal tendencies
- not suitable for bipolar (manic depressive) illness
