Pharmacology
Potent and selective inhibitory action on CNS neuronal reuptake of 5-HT resulting in increased 5-HT concentrations at the synaptic clefts, leading to facilitation of its sustained activity at the postsynaptic receptor sites
Dosage & Administration
- Adult starting dose: 50mg for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
- Adult therapeutic range: 50-200mg for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
- Adult starting dose: 50mg for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Adult therapeutic range: 50-200mg for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Adult starting dose: 25mg for Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder
- Adult therapeutic range: 50-200mg for Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder
- Pediatric starting dose: 25mg for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (ages 6-12 years old)
- Pediatric therapeutic range: 50-200mg for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (ages 6-12 years old)
- Starting dosage for PMDD: 50mg/day, with options for continuous or intermittent dosing
- Continuous dosing may be increased up to 150mg per day
- Intermittent dosing may be increased up to 100mg per day
- Recommended interval between dose changes: one week
Interaction
Potential effects of co-administration of drugs that are highly bound to plasma proteins. It may interact with drugs such as Cimetidine, Diazepam, Hypoglycemic drugs, Atenolol etc.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Sertraline or any of the excipients of the drug. Not recommended in patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety during human pregnancy not established. Known to be excreted in breast milk. Discontinuation of breast-feeding should be considered if treatment is necessary.
Precautions & Warnings
- Precaution in case of liver problems, kidney diseases, seizures, and heart problems
- May cause dizziness or drowsiness
- Caution in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery
- Caution advised while using in the elderly
- Do not take if MAOI has been taken in the last five weeks
- Risk of suicidal thinking and change of behavior may occur
