Description

  • An anti-depressant medication indicated for Major depressive disorder (MDD), Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Panic disorder (PD), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Social anxiety disorder (SAD), Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

Pharmacology

  • Potent and selective inhibitory action on CNS neuronal reuptake of 5-HT
  • Increased 5-HT concentrations at the synaptic clefts
  • Facilitation of sustained activity at the postsynaptic receptor sites
  • Improvement of depression
  • Reduction of Serotonin turnover in brain by Sertraline

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: Starting Dose - 25 mg to 50 mg
  • Adults: Therapeutic Range - 50 mg to 200 mg
  • Pediatric Patients (ages 6-12 years old): Starting Dose - 25 mg
  • Pediatric Patients (ages 6-12 years old): Therapeutic Range - 50 mg to 200 mg
  • Recommended interval between dose changes is one week
  • PMDD Starting dosage - 50 mg/day, Intermittent dosing may be repeated

Interaction

  • Potential effects of co-administration of drugs that are highly bound to plasma proteins
  • Interaction with Cimetidine, CNS active drugs like Diazepam, Hypoglycemic drugs, Atenolol etc.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Sertraline or any of the excipients of the drug
  • Not recommended in patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in case of liver problems, kidney diseases, seizures, heart problems and any allergies
  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness
  • Caution in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery
  • Caution in the elderly
  • Do not take Zosert if monoamine oxidase inhibitor has been taken in the last five weeks
  • Close monitoring of the patient after 2 to 3 weeks of use is required for risk of suicidal thinking and change of behavior
