Description
- Treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD)
- Enhances central noradrenergic and serotonergic activity
- Acts as an antagonist at central presynaptic α2-adrenergic inhibitory autoreceptors and heteroreceptors
- Moderate peripheral α1-adrenergic antagonist
- Potent antagonist of 5- HT<sub>2</sub> and 5-HT<sub>3</sub> receptors
- Moderate antagonist at muscarinic receptors
- Potent antagonist of histamine (H<sub>1</sub>) receptors
- Pharmacokinetics: Rapid and well-absorbed, peak plasma levels after about 2 hours, mean half-life of elimination is 20-40 hours
- Recommended adult starting dose: 15 mg/day
- Usable in adults
- Not recommended for use in children
- Clinically significant drug-drug interactions with MAOIs and other serotonergic drugs
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Mirtazapine or its excipients
- Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors
- Common side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased appetite, weight gain
- Pregnancy Category-C
- Caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Encouraged to be alert to certain behavioral changes during treatment
