Indications

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Motion sickness
• Vertigo

Pharmacology

• Antiemetic properties
• Anticholinergic properties
• Antihistaminic properties
• Reduces sensitivity of the labyrinthine apparatus
• Acts on nerve pathways to the vomiting center
• Duration of action 12-24 hours
• Onset of action 30-60 minutes

Dosage & Administration

• Adult dosage: 25-50 mg once daily
• Motion sickness dosage: 25-50 mg 1 hour prior to travel, repeat every 24 hours if needed
• Vertigo dosage: 25-100 mg daily in divided doses
• Use in children should be determined by physician
• Use in elderly: no specific information available

Interactions

• May increase toxicity with CNS depressants
• May increase toxicity with neuroleptics
• May increase toxicity with anticholinergic drugs
• Alcohol can increase drowsiness
• Sedatives can increase drowsiness
• Tranquilizers can increase drowsiness

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to Meclizine or its excipients

• Use with caution in patients with enlarged prostate
• Use with caution in patients with glaucoma
• Use with caution in patients with urinary tract blockage

Overdose Effects

• Symptoms: Extreme excitability, seizures, drowsiness, hallucinations
• Treatment: Appropriate supportive and symptomatic treatment, consider dialysis
