Indications
- Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of emetogenic cancer chemotherapy

Description
- Oral soluble film designed to be applied on top of the tongue and dissolve within 20 seconds
- Active ingredient: Emiston base, a selective blocking agent of the serotonin 5-HT3 receptor type
Pharmacology
- Highly selective 5HT3 receptor-antagonist
- Blocks the initiation of vomiting reflex by activating vagal afferents
- Antagonism of 5HT3 receptors on neurons located in the peripheral and central nervous system
Dosage
- Different dosage recommendations for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and postoperative nausea and vomiting for adults, pediatric patients, and geriatric patients
- Dosage adjustment for patients with impaired renal and hepatic function
Administration
- Instructions for administration of oral soluble film, including tearing the pouch, placing the film on the tongue, and swallowing it after dissolution
Interaction
- Does not induce or inhibit the cytochrome P-450 drug-metabolizing enzyme system of the liver
- Metabolized by hepatic cytochrome P-450 drug-metabolizing enzymes
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients known to have hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components
- Concomitant use of apomorphine
Side Effects
- Frequently reported adverse events include headache, constipation, diarrhea, and rash
- Rare cases of anaphylaxis, brochospasm, tachycardia, and chest pain have been reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus in rats and rabbits
- Excreted in the breast milk of rats, caution advised for nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Hypersensitivity reactions reported in patients who exhibited hypersensitivity to other selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonists
- Should not be used instead of nasogastric suction in patients following abdominal surgery

- Dosage adjustment for patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
- Limited information available for pediatric patients 4 years of age or younger
