Indications
- Partial and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures
- Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Prophylaxis of bipolar disorder
Pharmacology
Carbamazepine depresses activity in the nucleus ventralis of the thalamus, reduces synaptic propagation of excitatory impulses or decreases summation of temporal stimulation leading to neural discharge by limiting influx of Na ions across cell membrane or other unknown mechanisms. It stimulates the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and potentiates its action in promoting reabsorption of water.

- Initial and maintenance dosages for different age groups and conditions
- Combination therapy with other anticonvulsants
- Trigeminal Neuralgia dosage and maintenance
Interaction
Galactorrhoea reported in women on oral contraceptives within the first two months of Anleptic CR treatment. Hepatic enzyme inducers such as Anleptic CR and Phenytoin may interact with Anleptic CR by increasing its metabolism, requiring a dosage increase.
Contraindications
- Atrioventricular block
- Bone marrow depression
- Porphyrias
- Allergy to tricyclic antidepressants
- Use of monoamine-oxidase inhibitor antidepressant (MAOI) in the last 14 days
Side Effects
- Common side effects (dizziness, drowsiness, ataxia, dry mouth, etc.)
- Severe adverse reactions in the hemopoietic system, the skin and the cardiovascular system
- Increased sun sensitivity
- Avoiding sun exposure and use of sunscreen
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category D. Carbamazepine and its epoxide metabolite are transferred to breast milk. Decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug.

- Caution while performing hazardous activities

- Caution when stopping the medication suddenly
- Caution in mixed seizures, elderly people, history of heart/kidney/liver disease, raised intraocular pressure, previous Anleptic CR therapy interruptions
