Indications

• Partial and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures
• Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures
• Trigeminal neuralgia
• Prophylaxis of bipolar disorder

Pharmacology

• Depresses activity in the nucleus ventralis of the thalamus
• Reduces synaptic propagation of excitatory impulses
• Decreases summation of temporal stimulation leading to neural discharge
• Limits influx of Na ions across cell membrane
• Stimulates the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
• Potentiates action in promoting reabsorption of water

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dosage for Adults and children over 12 years of age
• Initial dosage for Children 12-15 years of age
• Initial dosage for Children 6-12 years of age
• Initial dosage for Children under 6 years of age
• Combination therapy
• Trigeminal Neuralgia dosage
• Maintenance dosage
• Dosage adjustment with other anticonvulsants
• Dosage adjustment with hepatic enzyme inducers
• Administration without regards to meal
