Gaba 300 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Neuropathic Pain
• Adjunctive therapy in partial seizure and secondary generalized seizure

Pharmacology

• Gabapentin is an anti-convulsant
• Structural analog of gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA)
• Binds with the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage gated L-type Calcium channel
• Inhibits branched chain amino acid transferase
• Inhibits neurotransmitter release of excitatory amino acid

Dosage

• Initiation with a single 300 mg dose on Day-1
• Titration to a daily dose of 1800 mg for neuropathic pain
• Effective dose of 900 to 1800 mg/day for epilepsy
• Starting dose of 300 mg three times a day for patients over 12 years of age
• Starting dose of 10-15 mg/kg/day for pediatric patients age 3-12 years

Administration

• Oral administration
• May be taken with or without food

Interaction

• Antacids may reduce the bioavailability of Gaba
• Cimetidine may alter its renal excretion
• No interaction with other anti-epileptic drugs or oral contraceptive preparations

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to the drug

• Weight gain
• Peripheral edema
• Dry mouth
• Somnolence

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy category C
• Use during pregnancy only if potential benefits justify the potential risk to the fetus
• May be secreted through breast milk
• Use during lactation only if potential benefits justify the potential risk to the baby

• Instructed to take only as prescribed
• Instructions regarding driving or operating machinery while using Gaba

Use in Special Populations

• Dose reduction in case of renal impaired patients
