Gabapen 100 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Neuropathic Pain
• Adjunctive therapy in partial seizure and secondary generalized seizure

Pharmacology

• Anti-convulsant
• Structural analog of gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA)
• Binds with alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage gated L-type Calcium channel
• Inhibits branched chain amino acid transferase
• Inhibits neurotransmitter release of excitatory amino acid

Dosage

• Neuropathic Pain: Initiate with a single 300 mg dose on Day-1, then 300 mg twice on Day-2 and 300 mg thrice on Day-3
• Epilepsy: Effective dose of 900 to 1800 mg/day for patients over 12 years of age
• Paediatric patients age 3-12 year: Starting dose should range from 10-15 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses

Administration

• Oral administration with or without food

Interaction

• Antacids may reduce bioavailability by up to 20%
• Cimetidine may alter renal excretion
• No interactions with other anti-epileptic drugs or oral contraceptive preparations

Contraindications

• Patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy category C
• Use during pregnancy if potential benefits justify potential risk
• Secreted through breast milk, use during lactation if potential benefits justify potential risk

Precautions & Warnings

• Instructed to take as prescribed
• Patients advised not to drive or operate machinery until the effects on mental and/or motor performance are established

Use in Special Populations

• Gabapen doses must be reduced in renal impaired patients
