Indications
- Neuropathic Pain
- Adjunctive therapy in partial seizure and secondary generalized seizure
Pharmacology
- Gabapentin is a structural analog of gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA)
- Binds with the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage gated L-type Calcium channel
- Inhibits branched chain amino acid transferase
- Inhibits neurotransmitter release of excitatory amino acid
Dosage
- 300 mg dose on Day-1, then 300 mg twice on Day-2, and 300 mg thrice on Day-3
- Daily dose of 1800 mg (divided TID) for Neuropathic Pain
- Patients over 12 years of age: effective dose is 900 to 1800 mg/day
- Paediatric patients age 3-12 years: starting dose should range from 10-15 mg/kg/day
Administration
- Oral administration with or without food
Interaction
- Antacids may reduce bioavailability by up to 20%
- Cimetidine may alter its renal excretion
- No interaction with other anti-epileptic drugs or oral contraceptive preparations
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C

Precautions & Warnings
- Take only as prescribed
- Be cautious when driving or operating machinery until effects on mental and/or motor performance are known
Use in Special Populations
- Doses must be reduced in renal impaired patients
