Description
- Phenyltriazine antiepileptic medication
- Used to control epileptic seizures
- Also used to treat some types of bipolar disorder
- Inhibits voltage-sensitive sodium channels
- Stabilizes neuronal membranes
- Inhibits presynaptic excitatory neurotransmitter release
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of voltage-sensitive sodium channels
- Modulation of release of presynaptic excitatory neurotransmitters
- Binding properties to various receptors
- Weak inhibitory effects on serotonin 5-HT3 receptors
- Weak binding to adenosine, adrenergic, dopamine, GABA, histamine, opioid, mACh, and serotonin 5-HT2 receptors
- Inhibition of Cav2.3 (R-type) calcium currents

Interaction
- Increased concentrations with valproate
- Decreased concentrations with carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, and rifampin

- Decreased exposure with protease inhibitors lopinavir/ritonavir and atazanavir/ritonavir
