Oxetol 150 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Monotherapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults
• Adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults
• Monotherapy in the treatment of partial seizures in children 4-16 years
• Adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in children 2-16 years

Pharmacology

• Mechanism of action involves blockade of voltage-sensitive sodium channels
• Stabilization of hyper excited neural membranes
• Inhibition of repetitive neuronal firing
• Diminishment of propagation of synaptic impulses

Dosage & Administration

• Adults: initiate with a dose of 600 mg/day, given twice-a-day
• Maximum daily dose for adults: 2400 mg/day
• Pediatrics: initiation with 8 to 10 mg/kg/day, given twice-a-day
• Maximum maintenance dose for pediatric patients: 60 mg/kg/day

Interaction

• Inhibition of CYP2C19 enzyme
• Potential interactions with phenobarbital and phenytoin
• Reduction of hormonal contraceptive effectiveness
• Lowering of AUC of felodipine
• Decrease in bioavailability of MHD by verapamil

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients

• Somnolence
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Diplopia
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fatigue
• Hyponatremia
• Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema
• Reports of anaphylaxis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Potential for serious birth defects
• Recommendation for vitamin K1 administration during pregnancy and to the newborn
• Excretion of Oxcarbazepine and MHD in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution with alcohol consumption
• Gradual withdrawal to minimize potential of increased seizure frequency
