Description
- Barbit is a barbiturate
- Nonselective CNS depressant
- Primarily used as a sedative hypnotic and anticonvulsant in subhypnotic doses
Pharmacology
- Acts on GABA receptors
- Increases synaptic inhibition
- Elevates seizure threshold
- Reduces spread of seizure activity
- Likely inhibits calcium channels
- Decreases excitatory transmitter release
- Effects on the polysynaptic midbrain reticular formation
Dosage & Administration

Interaction
Concomitant use of Alcohol or other CNS depressants may produce additive CNS depressant effects
Contraindications
Contradicted in patients with known Phenobarbital sensitivity or a history of latent porphyria
Side Effects
- Most common adverse reaction is somnolence
- Less frequent adverse reactions include agitation, confusion, hyperkinesia, and more

Pregnancy Category D; potential fetal damage; caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Tolerance and psychological and physical dependence may occur with continuing use
- Administer with caution to patients who are mentally depressed, have suicidal tendencies, or a history of drug abuse
- Caution in patients with hepatic damage
Overdose Effects
- Toxic dose of barbiturates varies considerably
- Manifested by CNS and respiratory depression
- Supportive treatment and immediate hospitalization necessary for treatment
