Indications

Composition
- Sodium Valproate BP 200 mg
- Controlled release tablet options: 200 mg, 300 mg, 500 mg
- Injectable solution: Sodium Valproate BP eqv. to Valproic Acid 500 mg
Pharmacology
- Anti-epileptic activity
- Increase in brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration
- Initial dosage for adults and children
- Maintenance dosage for epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and migraine
- Dosage for febrile convulsion
- Injection dosage for adults and children
Interaction
- Non-specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
- Significant interaction with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side Effects
- Common side effects: anorexia, nausea, vomiting
- CNS effects: sedation, ataxia, tremor
- Effects on hepatic function: elevation of liver enzymes, rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
- Hepatic injury, acute pancreatitis, hyperammonemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta
- Associated with neural tube defects
- Excreted in breast milk

- Monitoring liver functions
- Ensuring no undue potential for bleeding
- Risk in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, systemic lupus erythematosus
- Partially eliminated in urine as a ketone metabolite
