Indications

Pharmacology
- Endowed with anti-epileptic activity
- Increase brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Side Effects
- Common: anorexia, nausea, vomiting
- CNS effects: sedation, ataxia, tremor
- Rare: rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
- Hepatic function effects: elevation of liver enzymes, fulminate hepatitis, hepatic injury, acute pancreatitis, hyperammonemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Associated with neural tube defects in newborn
- Excreted in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor liver functions
- Ensure no potential for bleeding before major surgery
- Take care in renal impairment, pregnancy, and breast-feeding
- Avoid sudden withdrawal of therapy
