Indications

  • Treatment of all types of epilepsy
  • Prophylaxis of febrile convulsion
  • Prophylaxis of post-traumatic epilepsy

Composition

  • Sodium Valproate tablet - 200 mg
  • Sodium Valproate syrup - 200 mg/5 ml
  • Sodium Valproate controlled release 200 tablet - 200 mg
  • Sodium Valproate controlled release 300 tablet - 300 mg
  • Sodium Valproate controlled release 500 tablet - 500 mg
  • Sodium Valproate injection - 500 mg/5 ml

Pharmacology

  • Anti-epileptic activity against various seizures
  • Increase brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral and injectable administration
  • Dosage adjustment based on body weight
  • Dosage increase at intervals for epilepsy treatment
  • Maintenance dosage for bipolar disorder and migraine
  • Slow intravenous injection and continuous infusion

Interaction

  • Inhibition of drug metabolism
  • Significant interaction with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential

Side Effects

  • Anorexia, nausea, and vomiting
  • Effects on CNS including sedation, ataxia, and tremor
  • Rash, alopecia, and appetite stimulation
  • Elevation of liver enzymes in plasma
  • Hepatic injury, acute pancreatitis, and hyperammonemia
  • Occasional fatal fulminate hepatitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Crosses the placenta
  • Associated with neural tube defects in newborn
  • Excreted in breast milk
  • No significant risk in breastfed infants
