Description
- An oral medication for the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and prophylaxis of migraine

Indications
- Treatment of various types of epilepsy including partial, absence, generalized tonic-clonic, myoclonic, atonic, and mixed seizures
- Prophylaxis of febrile convulsion and post-traumatic epilepsy
- Treatment of bipolar disorder and prophylaxis of migraine
Composition
- Enteric-coated tablets containing Sodium Valproate BP 200 mg
- Syrup containing Sodium Valproate BP 200 mg per 5 ml
- Controlled release tablets in 200 mg, 300 mg, and 500 mg strengths
- Injectable solution containing Sodium Valproate BP equivalent to Valproic Acid 500 mg per 5 ml
Mode of Action
- Endowed with anti-epileptic activity against a variety of seizures
- Suggested mechanism of action related to increased brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration in divided doses for epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and prophylaxis of migraine
- Initial adult dosage of 600 mg daily, increasing to a maximum of 2.5 g daily in divided doses for epilepsy
- Intravenous injection for adults and children
Interaction
- Acts as a non-specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
- Significant interaction with drugs such as Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, and Aspirin
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug and liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side Effects
- Common side effects include anorexia, nausea, and vomiting
- Effects on the CNS include sedation, ataxia, and tremor
- Minimized side effects with the use of enteric-coated tablets
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta and associated with neural tube defects in newborns
- Excreted in breast milk but likely causes no risk to the child
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor liver functions before and during therapy
- Ensure no potential for bleeding before starting and before major surgery
- Take caution in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and systemic lupus erythematosus
- Avoid sudden withdrawal of therapy
