Indications
- Treatment of Parkinson's disease

Description
- Levodopa as metabolic precursor of dopamine
- Carbidopa as dopa decarboxylase inhibitor
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage with 100/10 mg tablet
- Initial dosage with 250/25 mg tablet
- Titration of dosage upward
- Individualized maintenance dose
Interaction
- Postural hypotension when used with antihypertensive medicines
- Adverse reactions with tricyclic antidepressants
- Decrease in bioavailability when ingested with ferrous sulphate or gluconate
- Reduced therapeutic effects with dopamine-2 receptor antagonists and isoniazid
- Possible loss of therapeutic response with phenytoin and papaverine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Carbidopa and Levodopa
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Suspicious undiagnosed skin lesions or history of melanoma
Side Effects
- Dyskinesias including choreiform and dystonic movements
- Nausea
- Cardiovascular effects like palpitations and orthostatic effects
- Gastrointestinal effects such as vomiting and gastrointestinal bleeding
- Nervous system effects like dizziness and somnolence
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Unknown effects on human pregnancy
- Visceral and skeletal malformations in rabbits
- Unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for medicine-induced extrapyramidal reactions
- Observation for depression and suicidal tendencies
- Cautious administration to patients with cardiovascular or pulmonary disease
