Indications
- Adjunctive treatment of all forms of parkinsonian syndrome
- Symptomatic treatment of idiopathic, postencephalitic, and arteriosclerotic parkinsonian
- Control of extrapyramidal symptoms induced by neuroleptic drugs
Pharmacology
- Antimuscarinic antiparkinsonian agent
- Corrects relative cholinergic excess in parkinsonian
- Low toxicity synthetic tertiary amine
- Rapid absorption and disappearance from tissues
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration
- Administered preferably after meals
- Initial dosage for Parkinsonism: 2.5 mg 3 times a day
- Dosage adjustment based on tolerance
- Maximum daily dose: 20-30 mg divided into 3-4 doses
- IM or IV injection: 5-10 mg, maximum 20 mg daily
Interaction
- Increased anticholinergic activity with certain agents
- Reduction in ketoconazole absorption
Contraindications
- Caution in children and geriatric patients
- Cautious use in patients with diarrhea, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma
- Not established safety during pregnancy and lactation
Side Effects
- Dryness of the mouth at usual dosage levels
- Occasional mydriasis and blurred vision
- Occasional adverse G.I. effects like nausea and vomiting
- Rare allergic reactions and muscular weakness
- High doses may cause vertigo, confusion, and hallucinations

Precautions & Warnings
- Consideration for hepatic and renal impairment
- Caution in children and elderly
- Potential for psychiatric episode precipitation
