Indications
- Adjunctive treatment of parkinsonian syndrome
- Symptomatic treatment of idiopathic parkinsonian
- Control of extrapyramidal symptoms
- Treatment of acute dystonic reactions
- Treatment of akathisia induced by neuroleptic drugs
Pharmacology
- Antimuscarinic antiparkinsonian agent
- Correction of cholinergic excess
- Absorbed from gastrointestinal tract
- Rapid disappearance from tissues
- Rapid onset of action (5 to 20 minutes)
- Duration of effect up to 4 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration
- Administered preferably after meals
- Initial dosage for parkinsonism: 2.5 mg 3 times a day
- Dosage adjustment until total daily dose reaches 20-30 mg
- Initial dosage for drug-induced extrapyramidal symptom: 2.5 mg 3 times a day
- Incremental dosage adjustment as needed and tolerated
- IM or IV injection: 5-10 mg, repeatable up to 20 mg daily
Interaction
- Increased anticholinergic activity with certain agents
- Reduced absorption of ketoconazole
Contraindications
- Caution in children and geriatric patients
- Caution in patients with diarrhoea and cardiovascular disease
- Caution in patients with glaucoma, urinary retention, hepatic or renal impairment
- Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation
- No established safety data for use during pregnancy and lactation

- Dryness of the mouth
- Mydriasis
- Blurred vision
- Gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, constipation)
- Allergic reaction (e.g. rash)
- Muscular weakness
