Indications
- Cerebral vascular accidents and cerebral insufficiencies
- Mental retardation in children
- Behavior and psychotic problems in old age
Pharmacology
- Improves efficacy of the telencephalon
- Affects cognition, learning, memory, alertness, and consciousness
- Modifies neurotransmission within the brain
- Improves metabolic environment for neuronal function
- Acts as a haemorrheological agent
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dose for cerebrocortical insufficiency disorders: 800 mg 3 times a day for adults
- Daily dosage for myoclonic seizures dependent on weight for children
- Titration of dose for myoclonic seizures
- Reduction of initial dose once desired results have been obtained for children
Interaction
- Reported interaction with thyroid extract causing confusion, irritability, and sleep disorders
- No observed interaction with specific anti-epileptic drugs based on a small number of studies
Contraindications
- Contra-indicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency and hepatic impairment
- Monitoring of renal function is recommended in patients known to suffer from renal insufficiency
Side Effects
- Nervousness, agitation, irritability, anxiety, and sleep disturbances
- Fatigue or drowsiness
- Gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomachache
- Occasional reports of vertigo, headaches, trembling, and sexual stimulation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy or when breast feeding, except under exceptional circumstances
- Ability to cross the placenta
