Description

• Neuratam 800mg tablet is indicated for cerebral vascular accidents and cerebral insufficiencies, mental retardation in children, behavior and psychotic problems in old age. It belongs to the therapeutic class of adjunct anti-epileptic drugs and drugs used in tremor, tics, and related disorders. The tablet can improve cognitive function, memory deficits, and learning abilities. It is contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency and hepatic impairment. Storage conditions include keeping it in a cool and dry place at a temperature below 30˚C and away from sunlight.

DosageAndAdministration

• Adults: 800mg 3 times a day for cerebrocortical insufficiency disorders, 7.2gm daily for myoclonic seizures. Children: 50mg/kg of body weight in 3 divided doses.

Pharmacology

• Piracetam is a 'nootrope' that acts directly on the brain to improve cognitive function, learning, memory, alertness, and consciousness. It does not produce sedation or stimulation, and can modify neurotransmission within the brain.

Interaction

• No interaction observed with specific anti-epileptic drugs. Confusion, irritability, and sleep disorders reported in concomitant use with thyroid extract.

Contraindications

• Contra-indicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency and hepatic impairment. Monitoring of renal function is recommended. Dosage adjustments required based on renal function.

SideEffects

• Reported side effects include nervousness, agitation, irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, fatigue, drowsiness, gastrointestinal problems, vertigo, headaches, trembling, and sexual stimulation. Incidence of gastrointestinal problems ≤ 2%.

PregnancyAndLactation

• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, except under exceptional circumstances. Piracetam is able to cross the placenta.
