Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
- Used when diet, exercise, and weight loss have inadequate effect
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Facilitates Ca+2 transport across beta-cell membranes
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose of 40 to 80 mg daily
- Can be increased up to 320 mg daily when needed
- Recommended daily dose is one to four tablets
- To be taken before meal
- Should be taken with a glass of water at breakfast time
- Do not chew or crush the tablet
- Always eat a meal after taking the tablet
- Consult doctor when external factors change
Interaction
- May interact with other high blood sugar medicines
- May interact with antibiotics, medicines for ulcers, and painkillers
- May enhance effects of medicines reducing blood clotting
- Not recommended to be taken with alcohol
Contraindications
- Allergic to gliclazide or related medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes
- Presence of ketone bodies and sugar in urine
- Severe kidney or liver disease
