Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
- Used when diet, exercise, and weight loss alone do not control blood sugar
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Facilitates Ca+2 transport across the beta-cell membranes
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose: 40 to 80 mg daily
- Maximum dose: 320 mg daily in divided doses
- Take before meal
- Recommended daily dose for modified release: 1 to 4 tablets, maximum 120 mg
- For children, Gliclazide is contraindicated in juvenile-onset diabetes
Interaction
- Possible interactions with oral antidiabetics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, insulin, antibiotics, beta-blockers, ACE-inhibitors, antifungals, antidepressants, painkillers, alcohol, and more
- May enhance or weaken effects of certain medications
- Consult doctor before starting a new medicine
- Alcohol consumption not recommended
