Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes in adults
- Works when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient
Pharmacology
- Second generation sulfonylurea drug
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose: 40 to 80 mg daily
- Maximum dose: 320 mg daily in divided doses
- Administered before meal
- Recommended daily dose for modified release: 1 to 4 tablets (max 120 mg) at breakfast time
Interaction
- Strengthened effect with other oral antidiabetic medicines
- Weakened effect with medicines treating central nervous system disorders
- Interaction with medicines containing alcohol
Contraindications
- Allergic to sulfonylurea group medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Taking medicines to treat fungal infections
- Breastfeeding
