Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose is 40-80 mg daily
- Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily
- Recommended daily dose for modified release preparation is 1-4 tablets (max 120 mg) in a single intake at breakfast time
Interaction
- May be strengthened by other oral antidiabetic medicines
- May be weakened by medicines treating central nervous system disorders
- May increase effects of medicines reducing blood clotting
Contraindications
- Allergic to sulfonylurea group medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
- Having ketone bodies and sugar in urine
- Severe kidney or liver disease
