Indications

  • Reduces blood sugar levels
  • Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults

Pharmacology

  • Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
  • Decreases hepatic glucose output

Dosage & Administration

  • Initial dose: 40-80 mg daily
  • Maximum dose: 320 mg daily
  • Should be taken before meals
  • Usual daily dose for modified release preparation: 1-4 tablets
  • Recommended to be taken with a glass of water at breakfast time and with a meal

Interaction

  • May be affected by other medicines like oral antidiabetics, antibiotics, antifungals, painkillers, etc.
  • May increase effects of medicines reducing blood clotting like warfarin
  • Can be taken with food and non-alcoholic drinks
  • May impair ability to concentrate or react if blood sugar is too low or too high

Contraindications

  • Allergy to gliclazide or related medicines
  • Insulin-dependent diabetes
  • Presence of ketone bodies and sugar in urine
  • Severe kidney or liver disease
  • Taking medicines to treat fungal infections
  • Breastfeeding

Side Effects
