Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used for type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Facilitates Ca+2 transport across beta-cell membranes
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose: 40-80 mg daily
- Maximum dose: 320 mg daily
- Dose determined by doctor based on blood and urine sugar levels
- For children, Gliclazide is contraindicated
Interaction
- May be strengthened by certain medicines e.g., oral antidiabetics and beta-blockers
- May be weakened by certain medicines e.g., corticosteroids and salbutamol
- May increase effects of warfarin
- May cause blood glucose disturbance when taken with fluoroquinolones
- Recommended not to be taken with alcohol

- Allergic to sulfonylurea medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Taking medicines for fungal infections
