Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used for type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta-cells
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose is 40 to 80 mg daily
- Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily
- Administered before meal
- Recommended daily dose for modified release preparation is one to four tablets
- Must be taken with a meal after tablet intake
Interaction
- Blood sugar effects may be altered when taken with specific medicines
- May increase the effects of medicines reducing blood clotting
- Can be taken with food and non-alcoholic drinks
- May impact ability to concentrate or react
Contraindications
- Allergy to sulfonylurea group medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes
- Presence of ketone bodies and sugar in urine
