Indications
Reduces blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes when diet, exercise, and weight loss are insufficient.
Pharmacology
Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells and decreases hepatic glucose output.
Dosage
- Usual initial dose: 40-80 mg daily (can be increased up to 320 mg daily)
- Take before meal
- Modified release: 1-4 tablets (max 120 mg) at breakfast time
- Combination therapy may require dose adjustments
Contraindications
- Allergy to sulfonylureas or related medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, pre-coma, or coma
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Breastfeeding
