Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Oral antidiabetic medicine
- Type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
- Inadequate response to diet, exercise, and weight loss alone
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose is 40 to 80 mg daily
- Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily
- Film-coated tablet
- Modified release preparation
- Maximum 120 mg daily in a single intake
Interaction
- May interact with oral antidiabetics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, insulin
- May interact with antibiotics, beta-blockers, ACE-inhibitors, corticosteroids
- May interact with fluconazole, H2 receptor antagonists, monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- May interact with phenylbutazone, ibuprofen, alcohol
- May interact with chlorpromazine, salbutamol, danazol, St. John's Wort
Contraindications
- Allergy to gliclazide or sulfonylureas
- Insulin-dependent diabetes
- Ketone bodies and sugar in urine
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Breastfeeding
