Description
- Oral medication for type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults
Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used when diet, exercise, and weight loss alone are insufficient
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Facilitates Ca+2 transport across beta-cell membranes
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
DosageAdministration
- Usual initial dose: 40 to 80 mg daily
- Maximum dose: 320 mg daily
- Dose determined by doctor based on glucose levels
- Modified release preparation: 1 to 4 tablets daily at breakfast time
