Description
Zenzide is a medicine that reduces blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and weight loss alone are not adequate. It belongs to the sulphonylurea group and stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells.
Dosage
The usual initial dose is 40 to 80 mg daily, with a maximum of 320 mg daily. The recommended daily dose for modified release tablets is one to four tablets (maximum 120 mg) at breakfast time.
Mode of Action
Stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic cells by facilitating Ca+2 transport and decreases hepatic glucose output.
Indications
Reduces blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and weight loss alone are not adequate.
Interaction
- The blood sugar-lowering effect may be strengthened by certain medicines (other antidiabetics, antibiotics, medicines for high blood pressure, etc.)
- The blood glucose-lowering effect may be weakened by other medicines (to treat central nervous system disorders, inflammation, asthma, etc.)
- May interact with medicines that reduce blood clotting (warfarin)
- Not recommended with alcohol consumption
- May impair concentration and reaction time

- Allergy to sulfonylureas or related medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
- Ketone bodies and sugar in urine
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Taking medicines for fungal infections
